New York City FC return to action Wednesday night as they host the Houston Dynamo at Yankee Stadium.
City enter the match aiming to build on their 3-1 weekend win over the Chicago Fire—their second victory in the last three games.
Head Coach Pascal Jansen addressed the media on Tuesday, offering insights into the team’s preparation, injury updates, and the ongoing internal competition for places.
“Rotating players is one of the tools that you have as a coach,” he said. “Going into games, it's something that's always on my mind. We’ve prepared ourselves well for this game against Houston coming out of the win over Chicago.
“Today was another training day, so we’ll have to see after this session if there are any things we need to consider. Otherwise, we’ll just go into this game as good as we can.”
There was encouraging news on the injury front, with midfielder Keaton Parks returning to the squad. However, Jansen confirmed that several players will remain unavailable.
“I’m very happy that Keaton Parks is part of the roster again, that’s looking good,” he said. “The problems with his foot are improving. Andrés [Perea], however, didn’t make it. We have to take good care of him and give him more time to prepare for the next game.
“Kevin [O’Toole] is struggling a little bit. It’s taking longer than we anticipated, but we’re taking no risks with him. Malachi [Jones] is the other one. That’s a situation where we all just have to wait and see.”
Jansen also underlined the value of training performance in determining lineup decisions, beyond what happens on matchday.
“Having impact during the weekend is one part of a sub’s world,” he said. “The other world is what you show during training. Players have multiple moments to show whether they can compete for a position. Finding a good balance between rotation, changing players, and keeping players in form. That’s my job, and that’s what’s always on my mind.”
Defender Tayvon Gray echoed his coach’s sentiments, welcoming the competition within the squad—particularly at his position.
“I think the competition is good,” Gray said. “Mitja [Ilenič] is a very good player. I’m confident in my abilities and what I bring to the team, but ultimately it’s the coach’s decision. He’s a good player and a good guy, and we’re all pushing each other.”
Gray also spoke about developing the attacking side of his game.
“People say my defensive game is strong, but I’ve been working to change the narrative — I’m not just a defensive player,” he said. “I think last year I showed I can be offensive too.
“It’s just about knowing when to go forward and when to hold back—taking what the opponent gives me. That’s a big part of my game now, finding that balance between being aggressive and staying disciplined.”
NYCFC take on the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday, May 28, at Yankee Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be available to watch on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.
